09:30 - 16:30A stroll around Taksim, the civic center of Istanbul.

Guided by Orhan EsenTaksim square is the undisputed and unavoidable hub of the metropolis. Every path leads over it. All discussions and manifestations of the public being in Istanbul focuses on Taksim. One immediately has the feeling 'to know' it. Still its complex history needs a de/reconstruction, as it sums up the history of modernization of Istanbul with its successes and failures. Tour starts and ends with an outlook into 19th century Pera, into the cosmopolitan boomtown of Ottoman early modernism. History of rise, decline, and gentrification of Pera is also at the very heart of all urban disputes at present.

This tour will take the group to the margins of the metropolis. The tour will mainly prevail former agricultural or forestry areas that were target of developments in different forms after 1980s. The construction of a second peripheric highway around the metropolis 1989 carried development into ecologically fragile northern areas and started discussions still dominating the agenda of urban sustainability. This will be the day to cross to the asian side with roughly 40 % of the total metropolitan population, mainly a sleepers town for commuters. We will make our way to the periphery through the 'Highway Istanbul' located on a ridge, the topographic backbone of Istanbul that has functioned as an artery of capital flow since 150 years.

09:00 - 15:30
Bustour, The 'poor' center guided by Orhan Esen

The southern and western center of Istanbul, comprising of the historical peninsula and the Golden Horn basin is obviously not a posh area as it is. The historical peninsula with its traditional neighbourhood structures (mahalles) have since early modern times been abandoned by capital and suffered from a lack of investments. Its modernization followed a different path then of the north, a more regulated one. Golden Horn and its adjacent valleys constitute a topographic and functional backbone through the heart of the metropolis. Since the early days of industrialization the area created its own urbanity 'at the backstage'.
The deindustrialization in neo-liberal terms has resulted in a harsh devaleurization in many parts of this geography. It has become a host to the slums of the metropolis, nowadays targeted by the 3rd wave of gentrification. However the area is far from homogenous: the developments in this vast area are locally quite unequal. Many neighbourhoods are marked by the presence of a rising new middle class with migration background, very eager in taking advantage of the opportunities of the bsooming metropolis. Their aggressive vertical social mobility has become a major drive for urban transformations, linked with the recent wave of globalization. A hard route indeed.

09:00 start from Buyuk Londra, possible to join @Taksim sq., AKM

* Dolapdere valley: ‘the lower Pera’
* Kasimpasa: from shipyards to kitchens

* Drive along the Golden Horn, south coast.

* Fener; legacy of early modern transformation of the old mahalle.
* Eyup; the former Fez factory.

* Outlook to the North coast of the ‘deindustrialized’ Golden Horn A new venue for culture industries ? Arsenal, the old Galata Bridge, Koc Industrial Museum, Sutluce Cultural Center, the 'Miniaturk', Santral Istanbul, ...

* Alibeykoy: The gecekondu and its transformation* Kagithane valley; Industrial valley at the backyard becomes the new 'west corridor' of the CBD

* Tour terminates at santralistanbul, an ex power plant, now serving as a center for arts and education. A project of the Bilgi University

Arrival Information

D. Weather

At this moment (Sunday 9th March) it is quite spring-like and sunny, with rather chilly evenings. However, don't trust march ! Severe comebacks of winter with unpleasant cold rain and icy/snowy storms are not unusual at this time of the year.

Arrival Information

A. How to get to Taksim, to the Büyük Londra Hotel and to Santral Istanbul

Step 1 How to get to Taksim: You need to get to the centrally located Taksim Square, in any case, except you take a taxi directly to the hotel.

Step 2 How to get to The Buyuk Londra hotel: which is the main meeting point for most occasions as well.

Step 3 How to get to Santral Istanbul / for the public panel on friday: For group 2 only. First group is on tour anyway, which terminates at Santral.

Step 4 Troubleshooting: Just in case of emergencies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. How to get to Taksim

1.1. Arrivals from Sabiha Gökcen airport (Asian side)

From Sabiha Gökcen it is easiest to take the public buses (only at day time) or private buses of Havas company (also at night) leaving from the exit of the arrival terminal. The journey takes around 45 -90 min. and costs 9 Turkish Liras (if you do not have Turkish Liras yet you can pay also with 5 Euros).

For city buses you need to buy a ticket beforehand (fare like 80 - 90 cents, obtainable as 5 magnetic tickets in block).

Please note: At night the Havas bus goes directly to Taksim square. At day times all buses terminate in 4. Levent (read 'dirt' levent). Here you will have access to the Levent Metro station to get to Taksim square (terminal station) by underground. Take the Taksim exit (not: Taksim Gezi).

If you do not want to take the Metro you can also take a bus or a taxi from Levent directly to the hotel (costs: some 20 Liras, 30-90 minutes for 6 kms compared to 10 minutes by tube).

1.2. From Atatürk Airport (European side)

From Atatürk Airport the easiest way is to take the Havas bus from the exit of the arrival terminal, directly to Taksim Square departing every half hour. The journey takes around 25 min. (at peak hours up to 90 minutes) and costs 9 Turkish Liras (also payable as 5 Euros).

Public buses from Ataturk Airport to Taksim are cheap, (80-90 cents) but they are hidden (!) - they start from the domestic terminal. Investigate on site...

The Metro is very easy to find, but getting to Taksim per tube is only recommendable if you have plenty of time (about 80 minutes, worth at rush hour only).

1.Take metro to Aksaray 2. change in Zeytinburnu to tram to Kabatas 3. arrive at the terminal station Kabatas 4. change in Kabatas to funicular -underground cablecar- to Taksim.

Taxis to Taksim area at daytime cost about 30 - 35 liras (at night 50 % more). Unless they drive different highway routes !

Meters are usual. Don’t accept if they refuse opening a taximeter and try to bargain. Make clear that this is (above) what you pay. He will take the shortest way:) After midnight there is no bus or tube service. You have to take a taxi.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. How to get from Taxim square to Büyük Londra Hotel

From Taksim Square the easiest way is to take a taxi to the Hotel Büyük Londra. If the taxi driver does not know this hotel he will know Odakule building which is a well known office tower.

Walk from Taksim sq: (10-15 minutes) go into Istiklal street, pedestrian area, following the monorails of the 'nostalgic tram' which start at the Taksim monument. After about 1 km. you will recognize on the right hand side the only skyscraper on this street, the Odakule tower. Take the passage underneath Odakule, linking Istiklal St. and the Mesrutiyet St. where the Büyük Londra hotel is located. Turn right, after 10 ms you are at the entrance.

In any case, here again the address of the hotel: just take a print.

Grand Hotel de Londres / Buyuk Londra Oteli

Mesrutiyet Caddesi. No: 117

80050 Beyoglu Istanbul

Under this link you also find the hotel’s own directions and maps (which are advisable to have a brief look at beforehand):

http://www.londrahotel.net/map.php?dil=eng

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=104536543446669856378.000447efea78a2f4c102d&ll=41.033771,28.979981&spn=0.025898,0.057592&z=14

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. How to get to Santral Istanbul

Those who arrive in town in time should first go to Taksim square. The shuttle buses to Santral Istanbul depart at the front of the Atatürk Cultural Center (big cubic glass-facade building at the end of the square). They don’t wait: They just stop (every 20 minutes) and take passengers, for free. The buses are very easy to recognize: the phrase Santral Istanbul / Bilgi Universitesi is written on every bus. In doubt, ask students taking the shuttle.

Those who arrive on Friday, but would not make it to Taksim until 3 o clock PM, should directly take a taxi to Santral Istanbul campus of Bilgi University at Silahtaraga in the Eyüp district (quite the same distance like to Taksim, just other direction). Make sure before getting on that the driver knows where this is. The organizers of the taxi stop will help you to find a suitable driver.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Troubleshooting

Everyone having trouble at arrivals or at Taksim square on Friday, or just getting confused, should contact Sebastian (+ 90 (0) 537 401 05 18) or Banu (+ 90 (0) 536 568 91 96) per mobile phone, unless indicated for yourself otherwise per private correspondence.
